Mission Statement

Mustang Sport’s Club is an independent organization that promotes grade level club sports by targeting athletic development and competitive exposure to team sports.

The club’s primary mission is to create opportunities for boys and girls to play team sports together at a young age where they can learn essential skills and life lessons in ways that are consistent with best practices in youth athletics.

The Mustang Sports Club will teach the fundamentals of the game and promote good sportsmanship and respect for all participants; emphasizing:

  • Fun
  • Fundamental individual & team based skills
  • Sportsmanship
  • Teamwork
  • Leadership
  • Age & skill appropriate competition

The program is directed by a board of parent volunteers, and is composed primarily of Colorado Academy students, as well as friends and peers from the community.

Vision
To provide youth boys and girls access to competitive and developmental team play that enhances without compromising their school’s athletic programs and performance.

Values
Mustang Sports Club aspires to be an outstanding educational-athletic organization that provides a high-quality experience to every athlete. A high-quality experience is one in which every athlete:

  • Is coached using the principles of Positive Coaching
  • Has fun playing the game
  • Feels like an important part of the team regardless of performance
  • Learns "life lessons" that have value beyond the playing field
  • Learns the skills, tactics and strategies of the game and improves as the athlete is exposed to age and skill appropriate competition

We recognize that the coach is the one who most directly makes this all possible. It is our goal to provide every coach with tools to be successful as a Positive Coach. We are committed to creating a constructive culture in which coaches, parents, fans, officials and athletes work together to achieve our mission.

MSC and its coaches will adopt many of the values espoused by the Positive Coaching Alliance, which are centered around three core roles for a coach:

  • Redefine winning - Winning thru mastery instead of the scoreboard
  • Fill the Emotional Tank - Positive motivation instead of fear, intimidation or shame
  • Honor the Game - Know the Rules, Respect Opponents and Officials, Commit and Encourage your Team, Respect yourself.

General Guidelines for Team Formation:

Players will be placed on a team based on their registration number (First-Come-First-Served (FCFS.)) Player registration will be open without prejudice to all youth eligible to play in the sport.
  • Returning players are given priority during registration through an Early-Registration Period.
  • Once an early-registration period expires, new players and returning players will be added in order by registration number (on a FCFS basis)
  • Once a team is formed, coaches have the discretion to move players between teams if they feel his or her skill levels deem it to be appropriate, and there is another team that better meets the players needs
  • Every effort will be made to keep players together on the same team as they grow and progress through the program. As players age and competition increases players may be moved between teams if the coaches feel it is in the player and teams best interest. This will be the exception and not the norm, and will be based on skill level and player safety.
  • Older Teams (5th grade or higher) that are playing in the most competitive divisions may utilize a evaluation format for team selection.
  • Teams will be capped at 20 players unless unforeseen circumstances occur (ie., a former player attempts to register after deadline). These situations will be handled on a case-by-case basis.
  • Additional players will be put on a waiting list
  • Coaches have full discretion to add players to their team from the waiting list on a First-Come-First served basis, however coaches are not required to add players to a team once it has reached 20 players.
  • A second team may be formed if the total # of players for a given age group or skill level makes it possible to field two teams
  • When a second team is formed, players will be placed on teams that best match their skill level - this process will be managed by the coaching staff.
Guidelines for Playing Time and Positions:
  • Coaches are responsible for managing and monitoring play time and ensuring that each player gets exposure to the game throughout the season
  • Players should expect to play in every game
  • MSC can not guarantee equal playing times for all players. Play time may vary by player based on the competitiveness of the team.
  • Playing time will be managed by the coaches, who will target MINIMUM play times for each player that are based on the number of players on the team and the game time situations.
  • Players can expect to play multiple positions throughout the season, but may be positioned in some roles more often than others based on the players individual skills and the needs of the team
